Summer Pool Prep: A 5-Step Checklist to Get Your Equipment Ready for the Season
Spring is fading fast, and the hot summer days are just around the corner. It is almost time to pull off that winter cover and dive in! But before you plan your first backyard pool party, ensuring your pool equipment is fully functional is crucial for a clean, safe, and stress-free swimming season.
Opening a pool might seem overwhelming, but with the right approach, it is a breeze. Here is your essential 5-step summer pool prep checklist to get your equipment running smoothly.
1. Inspect and Remove the Pool Cover Before touching any equipment, clear off any leaves, debris, or standing water from your winter pool cover. Carefully remove the cover, clean it thoroughly, and let it dry completely before folding it for storage. This is also the perfect time to inspect your pool shell and tiles for any winter damage or cracks.
2. Prime and Inspect the Pool Pump Your pool pump is the heart of your circulation system. Before turning it on, inspect the housing for any visible cracks. Check the pump lid O-ring; if it is dried out or cracked, replace it and apply a silicone-based lubricant to ensure a watertight seal. Clean out the pump basket, and most importantly, fill the pump housing with water to "prime" it. Never run a pool pump dry, or you risk burning out the motor.
3. Clean and Reassemble the Filter A clean filter is the key to crystal-clear water.
-
Cartridge Filters: Inspect your cartridges. If they are frayed or over a year old, start the season with a fresh set.
-
Sand or D.E. Filters: Ensure the drain plugs are secure. You will likely need to perform a backwash once the system is running to clear out any settled debris.
4. Check Heaters and Smart Automation If you have a gas heater or electric heat pump, clear away any overgrown landscaping or debris around the unit to ensure proper airflow. Next, power on your smart pool automation system. Verify that it connects seamlessly to your Wi-Fi and that your motorized valves are actuating correctly to control water flow to water features or spa jets.
5. Start the System and Balance the Water Turn on your power breaker and start the pump. Check the entire equipment pad for leaks or drips. Once the water is circulating, let the system run continuously for 24 to 48 hours. During this time, shock the pool to kill any organic matter and use a reliable test kit to balance your pH, alkalinity, and chlorine levels.
